Steve Stokes is looking for "panelists"

I am still interested in trying to bring The Philosophy Café to a wider community. In the course of the Quest, I came to envision a Café that had participants from across the country. Many, many of the entrants to the Quest struck me as either a) sharing my notion that there ought to be a new kind of talk show for the radio, a talk show that focused on conversation, not on quarreling, or b) shared my appreciation for thought and/or philosophy. Many of you have such interesting voices, and such stellar articulation, and I for ONE, don’t want to let any of you go to waste. Time and again, I thought to myself, oh gosh, I would love to have them be on my radio Café, or at the very least I would love to treat them to the Café experience, because my hunch is they would get so much out of it. In many cases this applies to entrants that pitched ideas that had nothing to do with philosophy.

Well, the only thing I don’t have is money for my project, but I still have the vision and the desire to make the Philosophy Café available to the bigger world.

If you would like to join this endeavor, I invite you to contact me. Just let me know who you are that would be interested in pursuing this further with me and any others that might want to join this… shall we call it the Philosophy Café Guild?

We can start to brain storm our next move once we’ve assembled our crew.

If you'll have me, I'd participate. I like the idea of a panel from all makes and models to gather together.

SKYPE is great but you do have to have a good connection. Also, there are LOADS of free to you (or amazingly cheap---I mean very low) conferencing options---the free ones require that the people calling in dial long distance, but for me, I don't care---I have unlimited long distance and alot of people do. They will even record it for something like $10 and give you a CD or MP3, whatever.
Sounds fun--tell me when and where!

I wouldn't say philosophy is my strongest suit, either, but I love the idea of bouncing ideas off one another and sharing them with the world. I am so in if you're looking for people like me :)

In 1990 I launched a philosophical discussion forum called: Salon des philosophes in the hinterlands of NJ. This was held in area restaurants as a "face to face, interactive, real time" conversation. I put this in quotes because a former boss of mind, Mary Whelan, described live conversations this way. She was very cool. Anyway, I minored in philosophy at NYU and studied religious philosophy at Drew Grad School. So this is right up my alley. I say we shop around for a reasonably priced conference call vendor that also offers conference recording. I'll do some research. If you want to put me on your email list, contact me at: marylynn@marylynninc.com

I love this idea because lately I've been feeling like there are so many people around me who don't want to discuss ideas -- they just want to jump to an opinion, cling to it with the claws of death, and don't really enjoy entertaining new perspectives. I feel like I need to either relaunch the Salon or join a group such as you are proposing. Let's do it!

$14.00 a year!!!!!!!!

That is almost .038 cents a day! Unless it is a leap year then it is almost .038 cents a day!

Since you can not buy anything under a nickle anymore (including penny candy) I guess $14.00 a year is not too bad ;)

Congrats to the winners, and good luck next round!!

Hi Steve,
I just talked to my Mom about Skype, and she says it's awesome. But, they just started charging people a yearly fee of ... $14.00. If you and your panelists can swing that, then you can talk over the internet (with apparently surprisingly good quality) for free. She just doesn't know if they offer podcasters any bells and whistles ... She'll call me later, undoubtedly, with the answer to that. ... So, it sounds definitely possible. I'll keep you posted if my Mom finds out anything helpful.

I would postulate this pursuit has potential.
That's my William F. Buckley, Jr. I would be more interested in participating as myself.
I have no technical or financial resources to contribute, but can hold my own in most philosophical conversations. Love the idea. Coffee. Cream, no sugar.

I recommend using Skype. Each participant installs the (free) software which is then set up as a (free) conference call between everyone. Then, either one person records everything or each person records his or her own track and sends it to one person for editing together. Free software like Audacity or Garage Band can be used for recording.

Hope that helps! :)

That sound super distorted. You might just stick with a regular conference call. It also would enable more people to participate. There are sites where you can do free conference calls. and the one of you just has to get like a $10 device to patch it into a recorder or yr computer.

Skype is never really distorting the calls -- you just need a moderately fast connection (cable or DSL) and a quality headset microphone and you'll be good to go. I know a number of podcasts that record that way with no real problem. The main bugs with Skype are that it occasionally drops callers and doesn't always play well with recording software.

Anyway, work with what you've got, and what you're most comfortable with!

Cant you like do a live meeting with the other people via the internet and record it? Keep costs down etc., then put it on PRQ for free and if they like it then spend some cash doing it?

I am a glutton for punishment but I think I am more suited as a "wait wait dont tell me" or a "politically incorrect" panelist.

Ill play along if you need a seat warmer ;)

I was just wondering that, too. It seems like you could do it relatively easily (of course, I'm not the one to ask, but I'll ask my mom, she's more of a techie than I am... and she teaches on-line classes on Web stuff for a library school. What a brainiac!)

Oh, and I want in. But, you knew that already, didn't you?
