  • [Anne] Behind the Three

A couple of months ago, I noticed a small storefront with a sign out front that read, Iraqi Art Gallery I immediately thought of going in and doing a story about how and why someone decided to bring Iraqi art to a little shop on the North Chicago lake front. But as with many story ideas, this one never fully took root and I did not think about it until the Round 3 directives came out. There is a certain feeling, a sparkling kind of knowing that arises when you stumble over a subject/person/idea that you think you are going to invest actual production into. It is not unlike when you meet someone you want to kiss or at the very least ask out for a drink (and probably for a drink-drink and not just for coffee). So I got that feeling about contemporary Iraqi art. more...

Q & A

Why should you be on Public Radio?

I was one of those kids that always nagged all the other kids to put on a show. My best friend Liza Liss actually had a wooden stage built in her basement. All we did from age 5 to 13 was make up shows together. There are people I guess who just feel drawn to performing and those that don't. I do.

But from early on my favorite performers were really just great talkers. Lily Tomlin. Roseanne. Woody Allen. Then at some point I saw Sandra Bernhard and I got the notion that you could actually be in a show and just be yourself. Just talk and be yourself. So somewhere in the back of my head has been this drive to figure out how to do just that. I went the academic root for some time and studied ethnography, media and social change. Then I found radio after having a mid-mid life crisis while tooling around the This American Life website during the first Gulf War. Almost all the producers went to Salt School for Documentary Studies. So I applied and got in. I went and it really changed the trajectory of my life. I dropped out of graduate school and have been pursuing a freelance producer career ever since.

I believe I am charismatic, smart and absurd enough to have a really terrific go at becoming a public radio figure. I can just feel that it is a real possibility for me. I feel it so deeply that I can even write something as turdy as "I just feel it is a possibility for me" and be completely cool with it because that is how strongly I want this.

Who is your favorite host and why?

The first host(ess) I fell in love with was Marie Osmond. I believe that the closing song "May Tomorrow Be A Perfect Day" was more important than my parents bedtime stories in terms of calming me down at night. Then more obviously I would go with Terry Gross. She is smart and blunt which makes great radio. She is also meticulously prepared and her level of integrity makes guests unable to dole out the easy sound-bytes and into more intelligent waters.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I love synchronized swimming. There are nose plugs in my car, office, desk and (sometimes) purse at all times.

What's your favorite public radio show?

Chicago Public Radio's 848.

What's your secret talent?

I have horse whispering tendencies with cats and dogs.

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

Eye of the Tiger.

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

The people who live above me either like to wash their hand with butter and then pick up very heavy objects or just simply enjoy throwing anvils about their apartment. Loud, intermittent sounds of things dropping would have to be the answer.

What's your favorite sound memory?

My rabbi pronouncing me the Esther Williams of the temple at Bat Mitzvah. (I was the runner up in "Ballet Legs" at the 1985 MN Junior Synchronized Swimming competition.)

What station do you listen to the most?

WBEZ

"How's your tongue after all that clicking. I can only imagine what a charley horse feels like in your tongue muscle. You should really go get that checked out. But was it worth it? Well, regardless, it made for great audio."
