I have never seen Chuck before. Frightening!
Honestly, I did not listen to any other entries before I voted for Chuck because I have been a regular listener of his for over five years. I am also a regular NPR listener during the week, but "This is Hell" is better than anything WBEZ (Chicago's NPR affiliate) puts on the radio, and it is the only thing that gets me through work on Saturdays. If I had to listen to "Cartalk" rehash the same schtick one more time, I think I would have to hang myself. Now that this contest is down to 10, I have listened to the rest of the finalists, and I can truthfully say the rest are not in Chuck's league. Chuck's show is more informative than "Worldview'" and makes me laugh more than "This American life."
I have always been content to have Chuck's four hour show come to me from my university radio station, and it would be a little sad to see him polished up or his show shortened for mass appeal, but the dude deserves to make a buck.
A typical Saturday morning in our house:
Wake up when the kids start crying. Turn on WBEZ. Make pancakes. Feed kids. Make coffee. Eat pancakes. Let kids watch zombie TV. Wait for spouse to wake up.
9 am - RUN SCREAMING AND CURSING TO THE RADIO. The first abominable signs that Car Talk is coming on have shown themselves - whether it's the pathetic clowning laugh of "C and C" (I'll spare you my nicknames for them) or the bluegrass licks (btw I like bluegrass) - and I don't want to hear it. Turn radio to 89.3 FM as fast as I can, while apologizing to my 4 year old daughter for shouting all kinds of obscene words that I would never say under any other situation. Wait patiently for This is Hell while the previous show dwindles out and Chuck and his crew get their s**t together, coffee made, whatever... breathe a sigh of relief.
I mean it - that's really what it's like. I wish Car Talk would be permanently banished from the radio so I could calmly turn the dial to This is Hell, but there are enough people who apparently LIKE the show that my dues-paying comments will still be ignored. But This is Hell delivers what I want in spades in terms of guests and commentary.
As a member of the 50+ extinquished set, I am delighted to see Chuck up and running. Fun, funny and mature (looking),
Go on with your bad self!
Sally
