Do Over!
I made my submission, even practiced and recorded it over and over again. Now that I have listened to a couple dozen other contestants I have great ideas how to make it better.
Do any of you wish you could do it over? I have enjoyed listening to you. And I thank you for listening to my.
Good Luck everyone!
Have fun and smile through it all.
Cheers!
Steve
I’ve come to see that the ultimate source of all human anguish is that we are finite beings sentient of infinity.
Even if you could, you probably wouldn't like that one either.

If it's any consolation, I know of several people who have decided to wait and plot and record and re-record until they have some piece of audio Heaven.
The truth is, they are driving themselves crazy listening to other contestants, trying to decide what's best for the competition and re-recording so much that they can't decide what sounds best. I fear the end result is some contestants will be drawn away from their true voice (especially in round one) and will try to deliver a product.
Not to mention, you have the benefit of many more individuals listening and commenting than, say, someone who submits in May — which can only help!
Count yourselves lucky to have your recording "in the bag".
I agree. Mine is very plain compared to many I have since listened to.

I really think that I misunderstood the directions, so I had a sinking feeling five seconds after I posted my piece. I couldn't sleep for hours after I did it! I understand why we can only do one, but as an educator I was really hoping for a "do over", like I give my students when they "mess up". There is always another piece of paper to be had in my classroom!

The short answer is yes. I definitely wish I could do mine over.
The long answer: I normally get my best ideas first thing in the morning, in that gray-space between slumber and the start of the day. But I hardly ever get a full night's sleep anymore. I wake up at 4 a.m. every weekday to collect the news for my morning broadcast. It is a tough shift. I also had a personal project I was working on. So, last week was particularly grueling.
I read (Izzi's?) entry early on saying we shouldn't procrastinate. So, I didn't. But for once in my life, I wish I had.
After my first 8-hour sleep in a week, I woke up on Saturday with THE idea. I fretted about it for a while, but then realized that worrying wasn't worth it. I did my best, and I am sure we are not the only contestants who wish they could go back and do it over again.
So far, I've received some nice feedback on what I did enter (http://www.publicradioquest.com/audio/user/1536). And I've really enjoyed listening to what other people have come up with. If for nothing else, this has given me some perspective about what ideas are floating around out there -- where media is headed, where we are taking it. And it is a great opportunity to network.
Good luck,

I had my piece completed when submissions began, but I started second-guessing myself immediately. Then I decided exactly what you said (go with your gut, it is what it is). If I had really tried to live up to the really high standards that have been set, I ultimately wouldn't have sounded like myself.
PS. This was supposed to be in response to Katie Bell's comment below. Ooops.
And we really should come up with a medical term for it. I can't imagine there's one person here who doesn't wish they could do over. In fact, I submitted on day one instead of reading the forums, getting terrific tips, scoping out the other contestants, etc. And there it is. The beauty of no do overs is that now we can all chill and enjoy the ride. It is what it is. And sometimes do overs, polishing, second guesses and what ifs can absolutely kill the fire and magic of your first gut instincts. Be strong, have pride in what you've done and (breathe) let it go...
ps someone please resend this to me when I start freaking out again--it comes back every couple of days : )
Well, at home I kept forgetting or getting distracted. "I have to make an 'about me' clip for the...oh, I should vacuum the carpet before...dog wants another...Dove chocolate is awesome..."
So, today I just grabbed the only audio clip I have with me that is under 2:00...and then remembered that I forgot that it is supposed to be 'about me' not just 'by me'.
Gotta call my doctor and up the meds.
