Queston regarding points

Submitted by Dani Cutler on March 9, 2007 - 10:14am. ::

Hi there!

I was just wondering why I have less points showing on the affiliate list, than the amount of points that are listed in my profile?

Is there a lag before they are counted? How does that work?

Just curious, thanks!

I hope that my endless obsession with this website (which is significant but it dwarfed by the obsession of some other notable people) does get me a mug or something. Ok, so I have "only" rated about 430 entries, but, hey, that is a lot of time actively thinking about public radio!

I sort of wish i had prtq tivo and could fast forward to June 4, because the website is so addicting and compelling that it distracts from some of my other work!

Although nothing can beat the vintage holographic KJZZ (Phoenix) bookmark that my old boss gave me in terms of memorabilia. That thing is super cool. Plus it accompanied one of the best music books ever, "Woman with Guitar: Memphis Minnie's Blues" by Paul Garon and Beth Garon.

But i suggest something like a $30 gift certificate to the NPR store where I can win such prizes as an NPR Station Locator Map, Driveway Moments 5: All About Animals, a "Just Like Mom" Apron, or an NPR 2003 Collectible Ornament.

PLEEEEEASE?

Elizabeth

Question: I have had a banner on my site (http://www.joyfulnoise.net/song/song.html) for about a couple of weeks. I simply copied the HTML code & placed it there and I know it has been clicked, at least some, since some people have signed up via the banner. However, there is no listing of Affiliate Points on my account page ... the whole subtitle is not there. So I don't know if I missed some step, but would like to know if there's anything I need to do to connect the banner on my site with my account. -Joy

They took that off of our pages a few days back.

OK ... it was just kinda weird to me because as I look at the users to get to know people, I see they have Affiliate Points listed there, but there's no such subtitle on mine. So I was curious what was with that. But it looks like it's not a big deal anyway ...

Another thought ... I notice that as I brush over my banner with my curser, the affiliate link actually has my user number on it. Maybe the dang thing works after all!! So are the points included in the user total ...? Why does the sun go on shining? Why does the sea rush to shore? Some questions may never be answered. -Joy

Scroll down under the Top Affiliates table and you'll see "You have 1368 points." or however many aff points you have. It's NOT lumped into user points.

Hi Dani,

Thanks for the question. There are two types of points on the site:

Affiliate points, which you gain when people click on the banner that you have placed on your website. You gain user points when you perform certain actions on the site, things like posting a new topic, replying to a comment, inviting your friends to join the site. Affiliate points are stored as your friends and site visitors click on your banners but are only updated for users to see every hour.

We're trying to figure out what to give users who accumulate Affiliate points, user points are just a fun way to see how active you are on the site in relation to other members.

Hope that helps,

-matt

Matt, thanks for the clear explanation of Affiliate vs. user points. I'm a bit perplexed, though, with the way this contest seems to be as much about contestants being in-your-face and hanging with the popular crowd as it is about being a potential NPR host because of one's verbal & mental talents. Of course it's great to have as many sites linked to this one as possible for getting the word out on the contest, but both the Affiliate point system and User points as a "fun way to see how active you are on the site in relation to other members," give the impression that those with the most Affiliate points or activity on the site have some sort of competative edge over those of us who don't have our own websites and/or don't have a lot of time to post on-line... it's kinda like east coast exit poll data influencing west coast voters: the Public Radio Quest voting public doesn't even need to know what Affiliate or user points mean, they just see that some people have BIG numbers next to their entries, and given the general competitiveness of human nature, who would want to vote for a zero? I realize that folks out there with growing point scores in either category will think I'm a real spoil-sport, but as a NON-competitive coalition building type, I'm just curious as to why there's any need for entrants to be competing on this site over anything other than their potential "hostiness."

Well, one of us at least. I'd be very surprised if activity in the forums, commenting on other's submissions, etc. counts for anything - I am just putting off what I SHOULD be doing - actually working. :-/
