Yikes, am I the only person on earth without a website or a blog? Geeze, how will anyone but my friends even know I'm part of the Talent Quest? And there's no way I can get affiliate points, either. It's not like I'm a technophobe, but I think that having plenty of people with whom to talk (out loud) about ideas and opinions, plus already having gone nuts with many late night hours on email and a zillion listservs when I first got on-line (mid-90s), plus having kept very detailed daily diaries from 6th grade through grad school... well I won't say I'm past all that, just channeling my, uh, self-promotional energies into other forums (whatever that means)

What's your favorite public radio show?

I love Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. Need I explain why? I mean it's smart, clever, witty and timely, with a great line-up of regulars and an endless stream of perfect guests to abuse with amusing and irrelevant questions. Also, I have always written limericks in my head to pass the time or make sense out of a situation (what, doesn't everyone?) so I listen with great anticipation for every gem Carl Castle reads out.

What's your secret talent?

I spit ice cubes in the air and my dog jumps up to catch them-- yes, it DOES involve talent on my part; I have to aim properly for him to catch 'em. Also I can hum & whistle at the same time, and I can play both parts of Heart & Soul at the same time (I've never tried it while also humming & whistling, though). Oh yes, and the limericks thing (see above).

What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?

Blessedly, nothing right this minute... but now that you've suggested it I'm sure something will come along soon

What sound is most characteristic of where you live?

Dog communication at very specific times of day. Our yard borders a sidewalk that leads to an Elementary School, so over the years we've had a succession of dogs greeting children coming to and leaving school (8:30-45 and 3:15-30) with various degrees from friendly whines to outraged yelps, depending on how the kids themselves react to seeing the dogs. And there are neighbors who have also always had dogs that walk at regular times, so after dinner there's often a shouting match down at the fence. Currently we have neighbors a few doors down with three dogs who are out in their yard yelling out taunts every evening, so of course our dogs are right back at 'em. And the last sound of the day is the eerie howling around midnight, the response of one of our dogs to others all the way down the block; we humans can just barely hear their calls, but Miri answers with truly unearthly sounds.

What's your favorite sound memory?

Waking up just after dawn, before the birds were even stirring, and hearing a far off train whistle. My father is a train expert, and insists that no trains ever passed close enough to our suburban neighborhood for me to have heard any, but it happened several magical times in my childhood so I know it wasn't a dream.

Which station do you listen to most?
WAMU in Washington, DC - we keep it on all day at the office, switching to WAMU's HD alternative music station when talking heads start to blur together into one tedious drone
