Stint in Commercial radio.
Moved to DC with $300 and without a job.
Landed at NPR as overnight Editorial Assistant.
Those famous voices you've heard (on NPR)? I've produced and/or directed most of them.
Co-founded and ran a start-up company for 1.3 years
Lived in and taught radio journalism in Chile, twice.
Landed Fulbright grant and going back to South America Fall of 2007.
Wife has a Ph.d and works for EPA
Two kids, girl 11.5 and boy 9.- What's your favorite public radio show?
Marketplace. That's not about "business." It's about being invited in and treated as an equal.
- What's your secret talent?
I have three:
1. I seriously listen to what people say and believe their opinions can matter.
2. I'm a strong believer in civil public discourse.
3. I think before I speak.- What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?
"Hips Don't Lie" by Shakira
"Ladies in the house...No fighting!"- What sound is most characteristic of where you live?
My 'tween daughter...
- What's your favorite sound memory?
Listening to Stan Waquie of the Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico telling Katie Davis about the tradition behind "running" in Indian country. I'd bet money I could listen to that piece again and find exactly where we stood when we taped the interview. I can do this with many of the pieces I did, back in the day.
- Which station do you listen to most?
- I mix it up between Satellite Radio, Internet radio and terrestrial radio. I'm a geek, so I try to sample everything.
