You really only begin learning once you've graduated. After three years working as a newspaper editor/reporter in the Washington, DC area, I engaged in a career path that catapulted me into the world of commercial real estate. I found the field extremely rewarding but my heart still yearned to write that great American novel. Then at age 50, my world like a rug was pulled out from under my feet. An autoimmune disease complicated by other ailments hit like a Mack truck rendering it impossible for me to continue working. I spent the next two years being referred from one doctor's office to the next. As a result, I have three large 3-ring binders filled with the results from all kinds of tests and imaging but no comprehensive diagnosis or treatment plan. I found a staggering number of Americans experiencing the same ineptitude inherent in U.S. medical care. My goal now: document the inane ass-protect practices of doctors through humor in an effort to improve patient-doctor communications. First step: get my website "doctorblues.org" up and running. Seeking all the help you can muster.
- What's your favorite public radio show?
Tough question. I like so many. Fresh Air, I guess. The questions Terry asks are insightful and flow seamlessly. Diane and Kojo are daily staples, though. Now that I'm homebound, I listen all day, everyday straight through to Fair Game with a Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert break now and again.
- What's your secret talent?
Singing and songwriting. I was a mediocre alto until I had my tonsils and adenoids out as an adult. My first song is online at http://www.broadjam.com/doctorblues
- What song is stuck in your head right now, you know, a music wedgie?
Fever
- What sound is most characteristic of where you live?
NPR radio, barking and loud chirping. I have two elkhounds and two conures.
- What's your favorite sound memory?
Ocean waves and the wind at 1200 feet above ground.
- Which station do you listen to most?
- WAMU
